Introductory Law Enforcement Training for Incidents Involving Psychiatric Disorder
Law enforcement officers are increasingly called upon to manage incidents involving individuals with mental illness. NAMI Tennessee, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, has produced SAFE & AWARE FIRST RESPONDER EDUCTION, an introductory mental health curriculum for patrol officers and other law enforcement personnel.
“SAFE: Safe & Aware First Responder Education,” is designed to be conducted by law enforcement training officers, self-administered or presented with assistance from NAMI volunteers or other mental health personnel. The two-hour program is POST certified, in Tennessee, and consists of a pre-test, film (on DVD), discussion questions and post-test.
Learning Objectives:
- Gain awareness of signs and symptoms of mental illness
- Explore effective methods to communicate with individuals who appear to be experiencing psychiatric symptoms
- Explore effective interventions for calls concerning individuals with mental illness
- Gain empathy for individuals with mental illness
SAFE & AWARE: A film and study guide that may be used in group training sessions or individual self-administered study.
SAFE provides up to 3 hours of law enforcement training on effective response to incidents involving an individual with mental illness.
SAFE is written by family members, mental health professionals, and law enforcement officers.
